Light seems to work like liquids...it has places of tension, and places of flow. It passes through objects as energy, building on certain areas and releasing on others.

One thing that I have been trying lately are these steps:

Start with a hard brush that consists of 25 percent of the canvas size and block in.

Get half that size with a soft brush and add details until the brush is small.

Go over with a hard brush to tighten areas that need hard edges.

Rinse and repeat. 

Soft brushes allow for gradients, and hence, light.
